Gastric Bypass Surgery in Turkey

Gastric Bypass Surgery Gastric bypass is a treatment method used in the surgical treatment of obesity for years and in recent years, type 2 diabetes in Turkey and many parts of the world. Among these surgeries, we can count the surgeries called Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, mini gastric bypass, Duodenal switch. With these surgeries, food intake is restricted. It also reduces calorie intake by reducing nutrient absorption from the gut. Therefore, it is preferred in severely obese patients. In addition, since these surgeries cause gastrointestinal absorption and hormonal changes, they are also performed in the treatment of type 2 diabetes in selected cases. After these surgeries, type 2 diabetes patients can get rid of the drugs and insulin they use immediately after the surgery. Severely obese patients lose weight rapidly due to the calorie deficit caused by the reduced absorption of fatty and carbohydrate foods. When both the stomach and the intestinal structure are changed and eating habits are planned appropriately, individuals can comfortably attain the healthy body they want in a short time.

To Whom Is Gastric Bypass Surgery Applied?

Gastric bypass operation is applied to severely obese individuals who cannot lose weight with diet and suitable type 2 diabetes patients. It can be applied to individuals who have a body mass index of 40 and above, who do not benefit from sleeve gastrectomy surgery, who have undergone sleeve gastrectomy but have gained weight again, who are extremely obese and have metabolic syndrome.

What are the Gastric Bypass Types?

There are 3 different application methods of gastric bypass operation. These gastric bypass types are:

Roux-en-Y Gastrik By-pass : This surgery is widely performed in the world. It is one of the most preferred gastric bypass surgeries. In this method, where most of the absorption functions of the small intestine are preserved, digestive problems are very few. People treated with the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass method experience a feeling of fullness in a short time while consuming the nutrients in their meals.

Mini Gastrik By-pass : With this surgery, the proximal part of the stomach is made into a tube and consists of an anastomosis made with the small intestine at a certain cm. It is used in obesity and type 2 diabetes surgery.

Duodenal Switch : In this surgery, the stomach is turned into a tube and the bile duct is changed, and it is an operation performed between the stomach and small intestines.

In addition to the surgeries mentioned above, by-pass surgeries such as ileal interposition, single anastomosis gastric bypass and transit bipartition are also used in the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes surgery.

How is Gastric Bypass Surgery Performed?

Gastric bypass surgery is performed in two stages. In the first stage, the main purpose is to reduce the volume of the stomach. In the first stage, the upper part of the stomach is reduced and this area is separated for digestion. In the second stage, the bypass procedure, which gives the name to the operation, is performed. In this step, the volume of the small intestine is shortened and nutrients are absorbed less in this way. During eating, a large part of the stomach and a large part of the gastrointestinal tract are not used, and in this way, both the amount of food consumed and the percentage of absorption of nutrients are reduced. In addition, the neuroendocrine system of the intestines is changed (surgical treatment of TYPE 2 diabetes).

What are the Pros of Gastric Bypass Surgery?

More than 90 percent of people with hyperlipidemia recover.

Within twelve months after surgery, patients lose more than seventy percent of their excess weight.

Many diseases such as hypertension, sleep apnea and type 2 diabetes disappear completely in 70 percent of individuals.

Reflux recovery rate is high in gastroesophageal reflux patients.

This situation disappears in individuals who have self-confidence problems due to overweight problem. Thus, the incidence of diseases such as depression is also reduced.

The recovery rate with these surgeries in type 2 diabetes patients with metabolic syndrome is over 90% on average.

What Should Be Considered After Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Gastric bypass surgery has many benefits for health. However, the things to be considered after the treatment are at least as important as the surgery. A diet rich in protein and low in fat should be applied. This program is prepared for the individual and prepared by the surgeon and the bariatic dietitian, who is in his team, and is followed up at regular intervals. Low-fat cheese, strained yoghurt, soft and lean cooked meat, chicken fish, and easily digestible vegetable purees should be planned by a nutritionist and added to the diet. Foods should be added to the diet gradually as the digestive function of the stomach improves.
